Steven, is never one to dwell on the past, but lately his mind has been drifting back… images of his son (who left on “the day”) permeate his dreams. These dreams are so potent that Steven spends his waking hours drowning himself in liquor just to get through the day. Steven has always had a crippling fear of the ocean. As a little boy his grandfather, a Naval Captain, would recount this horrifying tale of an experience he had during the Second World War – how his ship had been torpedoed by German U-boats, then, as he was set adrift off the coast of France with his shipmates, had been forced to helplessly watch as most of his men were left to drown while the officers were safe aboard life rafts. Despite this powerful fear of the ocean (which has subsequently become poisonous) Steven always finds the water soothing…from a safe distance on shore, that is. Many a day he wanders down to the ocean to reflect and reminisce. As a priest nearing the end of the world, Steven became over-whelmed by all the parishioners and random strangers looking for last minute salvation. This, combined with his wife abandoning him and their son, forced Steven into action – he quit the church and began drowning his sorrows in the bottle. Now, over a hundred years later Steven finds himself on a journey that he never expected to be on – that of Humanity’s savior.
